7 things that make me awe-summmm!
- I spend a good deal of my time doing volunteer work. It started a few years ago at Christmas when the kids kept asking for stuff and kept getting it. I realized that they have no concept of money and husband and I thought they needed a good dose of reality. We had them volunteer anywhere they wanted for a few hours. Then husband and I realized we were pretty hypocritical since we didn't do anything either. Since then we have become involved with several charities in our area; I'm on the Board of our local Habitat for Humanity and the Family Selection Chair, I am a member of the local Junior Service Club which is a non-profit organization that helps needy families in our community, and I volunteer as often as I can at Hope Animal Rescues (which is where we got our Jenny).
- I, like Ice Queen, also always pick up after my dogs. I can't stand that some people think I won't mind stepping in a big pile of dog
shitpoop, but really I do mind it. Especially because I really like my shoes. The point is, if you are going to have a pet you need to be responsible for cleaning up after it when you are in public places like bike trails, parks, etc. Now, in my own yard I don't go pick it up. I figure that if you're walking around my yard then a) you know me well enough to know that I have 2 dogs and b) you are careful enough to look for land mines. - I am surrounded by teen age girls and have not shot, stabbed, maimed, marred, or damaged any one of them.
- I dress for the weather. I'm sorry but one of my pet peeves is seeing someone in a pink suit in the middle of december with sleet and snow and slush. Umm, your pretty pink pumps don't look right in that puddle of grimy snow melt. That also goes for the woman wearing the black velvet dress when it's 95 degrees out. Yes, I saw this woman at the pharmacy on friday. I wish I had my camera. Black velvet. On the hottest day we've had so far. That's just nuts.
- I never ridicule people for wearing inappropriate clothes...at least not to their faces. I only do it in the blogosphere. And, in my defence, I really would never talk about someones ability or inability to afford clothes. It's only that really, how about a t-shirt and shorts? Is black velvet all you had? In the middle of the day? When it's hotter than hades out??
- Crap. Now I feel all bad for being catty about this woman and her clothes. See, I am nice. Usually.
- I love almost all dogs. There are some that I think personalities just don't mesh, but for the most part dogs just want to love you and to be loved and there are no strings attached. Same with kitties. I love kitties but I have a daughter that is highly allergic and we just can't have them in the house. She's a senior in high school though so maybe in a few years...

this is all so funny! Seriously. I love these kind of things - because if I was sitting and having a drink with you and asked you to tell me these things you would clam up. :)
Oh Lord no Jules! If we were having wine I'd tell you everything you never wanted to hear about my life. Husband may shoot me dirty looks tho, but I'd do it anyway :)
I think that it is great that you find the time to do all that volunteer work, while working and raising kids, my hat's off to you!
Oh my I'm hootin' 'n' snortin'...neither are attractive. I'm absolutely wetting my pants (that's English for underpants) about the teenage girls that remain unscathed in your care. Waaaaah!!
I love this post, so funny and I need a giggle. Thanks for the giggle. Always gotta have the giggle.
And thanks for the tag/award. What fun! I was thinking about my 5 secrets last night, and panicking because I actually don't have them at this point...and realised they are nearly all things 'against' myself. So I started wondering if I'd stick in a few nice things about myself but thought it would look all wrong. But then I would hate for everyone to think I'm all nasty/shouty/antsy because that's just one part of my personality - I'm quite loving and kind and loyal etc too. So I accept my award, huzzah, and accept the challenge with gusto!
xx
PS I once walked 2 blocks in New York in open toed shoes. In January. I'm so English, I had no idea....taxi wouldn't take me so I had to drag my suitcase and my briefcase to the office. I had no hat, no umbrella and it was snowing HARD, and there was a couple of feet of snow on the ground. I rest my case...you can judge me if you like ;-)
I want to do meals on wheels with my boys. They are getting old enough to drop food off with me.
Congrats on your award!!! I think I saw a couple blogs to check out on your list :-)
Otin: Just please tell me that it's only your hat that's off! LMAO :D
Spud: I love that I can make you snort! And so happy to give you a reason to tell some "good things" about yourself. And, btw, I promise to not judge you on your being English and wearing open-toed shoes in NYC in January. But I'm picturing how disgusting that snow must have been getting all up in your peep-toes. I bet you wish you had your Wellies (that's what they're called there, right?). Anyway, the woman I was thinking of was giving a talk at the university a few years ago wearing a very springy suit with pink pumps in Reno in december. It just didn't look right to me. But maybe I'm just a bitch after all...
Hit40: meals on wheels is one of the charities that we work with thru the Jr Service Club. It's completely teen friendly (as long as youre in a safe area I guess) and the people are so appreciative. Be sure to do post on it so we know what the boys thought of their experience!
and they say that I am the one that makes funny comments! I see you have an evil side also! HAHA!
Haha! Good for you for not damaging the girls! Seriously!
How do you get time to volunteer? I feel bad now.
Ahh HAaaa.... I too am in JSL and this year have volunteered for wayyyy too much. Last year I was the social chair and loved it!!!! I love it and it's a great way to get the kids involved in giving back !!! Can't say I haven't injured my girls though, Syd had suffered a couple of burns while I was trying to straighten her hair.. stupid Mommy, flat irons are for adults!!!!
Otin: You had me pegged from the beginning I think, that's why we're bloggy buddies.
B: Some days not damaging one or more of the girls is harder than others. As for the volunteering I guess you just have to decide to make time. It does cut down on my wine time tho and that sucks...Besides, do what you can. If I had tried to do all this stuff a few years ago I never would have made it. Priorities change, then you can add new things.
Ali: I was on social committee last year and it was a blast. It's a lot of fun and the women in the group are great. As far as flat irons, its summer! Go with beachy waves, that's what I've been doing. Havne't even looked at my hairdryer in a month or so :)
congrats on the award queenie. do we have to call you "your majesty" now?
Congratulations! You deserve this crown!
Jaime: You may certainly call me "your majesty" if you like, but I prefer Goddes of All that is Good and Right With the World, And Wine. But that gets a little long, so whatever makes you happy ;-)
PShar: Thank you so much! I think tiaras suit my personality
Gosh here's a challenge! I'll have to think about that one, seriously, but thanks, it does sound like fun!!
And I'm with you on the dog thing, I love all dogs, I'm awesome like that, just like you :-)
Teenage girls - I don't know if I am going to make it through that as well as you are doing. My daughter is only nine, but I know the storm is coming . . .
Enjoy getting to know you more. I am a big dog fan, too. We have 2 chocolate labs, but I also love cats. The more fur the merrier! Find it fun to see how your estrogen-laced home compares to our testosterone-filled home. Either way, they are all teenagers, and I am finding a lot more grey beneath my tiara!!
Congratulations! And, hey, thank you very much for passing the award on to me. I am very honored, indeed. :^)
